Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a shrub whose root has been used in Ayurvedic practice for centuries. Modern supplements use standardized root extracts measured by withanolide content. It sits in the loose category of adaptogens, herbs studied in the context of the stress response.

Modern ashwagandha research is most focused on perceived stress, sleep quality and cortisol levels, using standardized extracts over 6 to 12 week periods. Some trials in trained men have also measured strength and recovery outcomes. Study quality varies, so we call it promising rather than proven.
